DESCRIPTION:From the Foundational Crime to the Making of a New State (and Nation): The End of the Ottoman Empire and the Creation of the Turkish Republic \nCall for Papers: Eleventh Workshop on Armenian and Turkish Scholarship \nWATS XI\, November 10-11\, 2023 \nTo mark the centennial year of the founding of the Turkish republic\, WATS (the Workshop on Armenian and Turkish Scholarship) has decided to organize an eleventh workshop at the University of Michigan in the fall of 2023 under the auspices of the Center for Armenian Studies. \nMarking the centenary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey\, our conference aims to bring a critical perspective on the process of making states that involved ethnic cleansing or genocide. Few modern states are free of dark histories of exclusion\, forced assimilation\, or more sanguinary solutions to the remnants of imperial diversity. Investigating states that were founded on dispossession of indigenous peoples\, we examine the Turkish past and the histories of the United States\, Israel\, and Australia\, among others. Turkey is not unique\, but its achievement in ridding Anatolia of Armenians and Assyrians\, like the removal of Native Americans from continental United States\, was admired by and positively referred to by Adolph Hitler as he planned his own genocidal policies in the lands to the east of Germany. \nOur conference examines the ideological and strategic choices made by Ottoman and Turkish nationalist leaders as they attempted to “modernize” their states through coercive demographic policies and the deployment of violence\, which became enshrined as part of the repertoire of governance in the Kemalist state. Having eliminated the bulk of Christians\, the heirs of the Ottomans repressed their former allies\, the Kurds\, turning what they conceived as a homogeneous ethnic nation-state into a mini-imperial state colonizing its non-Turkish subjects. \nJust as the controversial 1619 Project in the United States has contested the origins of the American republic by seeking its beginnings with the first importation of African slaves\, rather than the revolutionary events of 1776\, so shall this workshop explore the formative events and processes from the initiation of systemic reforms in the Ottoman Empire in 1789\, through the Tanzimat reforms of 1839 and 1876\, the coup d’état of 1908 and the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1916\, to the 1918 fall of the empire\, the 1919-1922 rise of the Kemalist nationalist movement\, and the 1923 founding of the Republic of Turkey. \nTwo of the original organizers of the series of WATS conferences\, Fatma Müge Göçek and Ronald Grigor Suny\, have taken on the task of putting together this eleventh conference in the WATS series. Papers will then be considered for publication in a volume by an interested university press. \nWe are particularly interested in younger scholars and graduate students who are working in this field about whom we may not be aware. \nInterested applicants are asked to send a short prospectus (1-2 pages) of their presentation to armenianstudies@umich.edu by June 15\, 2023 (EXTENDED DEADLINE). Applicants will be notified of results by June 30\, 2023.

DESCRIPTION:Dear Colleagues\, \nWe welcome paper proposals for the following seminar at the ACLA 2023 Annual Meeting in Chicago (March 16-19): The Ottoman Empire\, Its Minoritized Voices\, and the Global South. This seminar shifts the focus from hegemonic narratives of and about the Ottoman Empire to epistemic\, aesthetic\, sociocultural and political imaginaries of minoritized communities in and outside the Ottoman lands. We seek to understand how the histories\, images\, and legacies of the Ottoman Empire appear when perspectives from the Global South and the disadvantaged populations of the empire are foregrounded. How was the Ottoman rule experienced and evaluated by those who were at the margins of imperial power structures around the world? What forms of solidarities\, resistances\, revolutions\, critiques can be located in languages and among peoples that remain peripheral to the study of the Ottoman Empire in literary and cultural studies? We invite proposals from across disciplines to explore these questions together. \nSituating the Ottoman studies within larger disciplinary discussions in the humanities and social sciences\, the seminar will shed light on forms of imperialism that complicate the distinction between ‘imperial center’ and ‘marginalized periphery’ as they reveal\ncontradictions and ambiguities within the imperialistic and marginalized discourses. As papers steer attention to understudied authors\, languages\, and communities in the empire\, they also will have the opportunity to discuss how specific case studies can reshape theoretical debates in comparative literature on multilingualism\, imperialism\, and communal identities. \nPossible topics of discussion include but are not limited to:\n–Minor literatures and languages of the Ottoman Empire\n–Canons and their appropriations\n–Perceptions of the Ottoman Empire from the Global South\n–Subaltern voices (queer\, disabled\, racialized lives)\n–Slavery and slave trade\n–Imperial and anti-imperial narratives\n–Narratives of health and care (as scientifically\, politically or poetically understood) \nYou can submit a paper proposal for this seminar through the ACLA portal between October 1- October 31\, 2022. This Pre-Conference was established to mark the 20th anniversary of the founding of AATT. The Pre-Conference is co-sponsored by the institutional members of AATT and AATT.\n\nThe 17th annual Pre-Conference will take place ONLINE on December 1\, 2022\, in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Middle East Studies Association\, taking place in Denver\, CO December 1-4\, 2022. SUMMARY:Call for Papers: Children and Youth Migrants in Middle East and North African History
DESCRIPTION:Who are child and youth migrants? Marie Rodet and Elodie Razy classify migration as “any change of residence…that takes place outside of the space of a given community…whether it is temporary or permanent.”[1] This definition encompasses internal and international migration\, family migration\, labor migration\, adoption\, displacement\, enslavement\, trafficking\, “child rescuing\,” and participation in educational programs\, philanthropic trips\, or international competitions. Despite the range of migrations in which young people participate\, a simple internet search for “children\, migration\, and Middle East” yields results almost exclusively associated with forced displacement. Certainly\, children are represented disproportionately in displaced populations. Individuals under the age of 18 comprise nearly forty percent of the global refugee population\, and one in three children living outside their country of birth are refugees.[2] Nevertheless\, children have participated in migration within and outside MENA for a number of reasons and in a variety of conditions. Exclusive focus on displacement flattens the diversity of young migrants’ experiences\, casts young MENA migrants primarily as victims\, and contributes to the racialization of families and children in the history of their  journeys within and outside the MENA region. \nThis special issue (with guest editors Dr. Ella Fratantuono and Dr. Lucia Carminati) thus seeks to juxtapose varied experiences of and perspectives on young people’s migration in the history of the Middle East and North Africa. We welcome contributions including\, but not limited to\, scholarly articles as well as works of visual and/or audio art and literature. Contributions may consider child and youth migration in regards to themes such as: \n\nChanging meanings of “childhood” and “youth”\nIntra-regional mobility\nKinship and the family\nMigrant racialization\nBorder control and state-building\nChild and youth activism\nMethodologies in migration studies\nThe making of social categories (e.g. citizen\, migrant\, refugee)\nPerspectives on agency\, coercion\, decision-making\, and mobility\nEffects of migration for children and youth\nThe creation and maintenance of global\, regional\, and local systems of inequality\nNGO or humanitarian work centered on children and youth\nThe circulation of children’s and youth’s belongings and objects\nRegional and global circulation of pedagogical ideas\n\nAbstracts (~500 words) for scholarly articles and descriptions of other materials should be submitted in MS word format. DESCRIPTION:The Turkish Literature in Translation Reading Group at the University of Texas at Austin is starting its sixth term with a recently translated novel: A Strange Woman (Tuhaf Bir Kadın. Deep Vellum Press; 2022) by Leyla Erbil. This is the first novel by a Turkish female writer to ever be nominated for the Nobel. It narrates the story of Nermin\, a young woman and aspiring poet growing up in Istanbul. Nermin frequents coffeehouses and underground readings\, determined to immerse herself in the creative\, anarchist youth culture of Turkey’s capital; however\, she is regularly thwarted by her complicated relationship to her parents\, members of the old guard who are wary of Nermin’s turn toward secularism. One of the most influential Turkish writers of the twentieth century\, Leyla Erbil was an innovative literary stylist who tackled issues at the heart of what it means to be human\, in mind and body. Erbil ventured where few fast writers dared to tread\, turning her lens to the tides of social norms and the shaping of identities\, focusing intently on emotional conflict\, and plumbing the depths of history and psyche. SUMMARY:[University of Florida] A Call for Abstracts for the Fall 2022 Symposium: Assessing the Ethnic Groups of the Late Ottoman Empire through a Decolonial Lens 1900 -1922
DESCRIPTION:From September 13 to September 17 of 1922\, a holocaust engulfed the Ottoman city of Izmir. Almost one hundred years to the day\, on September 9 of 2022\, the Center for Greek Studies\, the Center for European Studies\, the Center for Jewish Studies and the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program are organizing a two-day symposium that focuses on the political and social events which culminated in the destruction of the city through a decolonial lens. The symposium will take place at the Reitz Student Union over two days with a three-night stay at the Reitz Union Hotel beginning with registration for the presenters on Friday\, September 9\, 2022\, at 6:30 pm and ending on Sunday\, September 11\, 2022\, at 4:00 pm. \nThe symposium will bring together junior and senior scholars whose research reexamines the political and social atmosphere leading up to and inclusive of political events that impacted ethnic groups of the Ottoman Empire through a decolonial lens. Furthermore\, the symposium will feature research that navigates away from recapitulations of modernist frameworks. Research that will be selected for the symposium will view these events through the vantage points of the individuals and ethnic groups within the Ottoman Empire that influenced and impacted their fruition. In this vein\, research presentations that focus on the Empire’s Albanians\, Arabs\, Armenians\, Assyrians\, Bulgarians\, Greeks\, Jews\, Kurds\, Laz\, Levantines\, Pomaks\, Roma\, Rum\, Serbians\, Turks\, Vlachs\, Yoruks and their respective diasporas through a decolonial lens will be featured. The goal of the symposium is to marshal decolonial theory in order to understand how the dynamics between the Ottoman Empire’s ethnic groups can provide insights for contemporary knowledge production for Armenia\, Greece\, Cyprus\, Iraq\, Israel\, Jordan\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Syria\, Turkey and the United States.
