SUMMARY:[University of Texas at Austin] Turkish Literature in Translation: Amy Marie Spangler Discusses "A Strange Woman" by Leyla Erbil
DESCRIPTION:The Turkish Literature in Translation Reading Group at the University of Texas at Austin is starting its sixth term with a recently translated novel: A Strange Woman (Tuhaf Bir Kadın. Deep Vellum Press; 2022) by Leyla Erbil. This is the first novel by a Turkish female writer to ever be nominated for the Nobel. It narrates the story of Nermin\, a young woman and aspiring poet growing up in Istanbul. Nermin frequents coffeehouses and underground readings\, determined to immerse herself in the creative\, anarchist youth culture of Turkey’s capital; however\, she is regularly thwarted by her complicated relationship to her parents\, members of the old guard who are wary of Nermin’s turn toward secularism. One of the most influential Turkish writers of the twentieth century\, Leyla Erbil was an innovative literary stylist who tackled issues at the heart of what it means to be human\, in mind and body. Erbil ventured where few fast writers dared to tread\, turning her lens to the tides of social norms and the shaping of identities\, focusing intently on emotional conflict\, and plumbing the depths of history and psyche. Translator Amy Marie Spangler will join the group for a Q&A interview with moderator İpek Şahinler\, followed by a group discussion of the novel. \nFor more information on this event\, please visit the event page. \nTo attend this event\, please use this registration link. \nEvent contact information: İpek Şahinler at ipeksahinler@utexas.edu

SUMMARY:[Anglo-Turkish Society] Online lecture: ‘Prisoner of the Infidels: The Life and Adventures of Osman Agha of Timişoara\, An Ottoman Muslim in 17th-Century Europe’\, Giancarlo Casale
DESCRIPTION:In 1688\, in the tumultuous aftermath of the failed Ottoman siege of Vienna\, a young soldier by the name of Osman of Timişoara fell prisoner to the Austrian Habsburgs\, and spent over a decade in captivity. In this respect\, he was no different from thousands of other Ottoman subjects who\, during the sixteenth\, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries\, fell into enemy hands for various reasons and spent time as enslaved captives in Christian Europe. What sets Osman apart\, however\, is that many years after his safe return to Ottoman territory\, he decided to write a detailed account of his experience\, resulting in the first book-length autobiography ever composed in Ottoman Turkish. Osman’s account\, now available in English translation for the first time\, is not only a gripping adventure tale–of prison breaks\, back-alley knife fights\, and fleeting love affairs–but also a deeply original and evocative work of literature\, addressing the profound themes of personhood\, self-discovery through alienation\, and the impossibility of every truly ‘returning home’ after after an experience of enslavement. https://www.angloturkishsociety.org.uk/doc/Giancarlo-Casale-lecture.pdf \nFor more information on this event\, please visit the event page. \nTo attend this event\, please use this registration link. \nEvent contact information: contact@angloturkishsociety.org.uk

SUMMARY:[University of Florida] A Call for Abstracts for the Fall 2022 Symposium: Assessing the Ethnic Groups of the Late Ottoman Empire through a Decolonial Lens 1900 -1922
DESCRIPTION:From September 13 to September 17 of 1922\, a holocaust engulfed the Ottoman city of Izmir. Almost one hundred years to the day\, on September 9 of 2022\, the Center for Greek Studies\, the Center for European Studies\, the Center for Jewish Studies and the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program are organizing a two-day symposium that focuses on the political and social events which culminated in the destruction of the city through a decolonial lens. The symposium will take place at the Reitz Student Union over two days with a three-night stay at the Reitz Union Hotel beginning with registration for the presenters on Friday\, September 9\, 2022\, at 6:30 pm and ending on Sunday\, September 11\, 2022\, at 4:00 pm. \nThe symposium will bring together junior and senior scholars whose research reexamines the political and social atmosphere leading up to and inclusive of political events that impacted ethnic groups of the Ottoman Empire through a decolonial lens. Furthermore\, the symposium will feature research that navigates away from recapitulations of modernist frameworks. Research that will be selected for the symposium will view these events through the vantage points of the individuals and ethnic groups within the Ottoman Empire that influenced and impacted their fruition. In this vein\, research presentations that focus on the Empire’s Albanians\, Arabs\, Armenians\, Assyrians\, Bulgarians\, Greeks\, Jews\, Kurds\, Laz\, Levantines\, Pomaks\, Roma\, Rum\, Serbians\, Turks\, Vlachs\, Yoruks and their respective diasporas through a decolonial lens will be featured. The goal of the symposium is to marshal decolonial theory in order to understand how the dynamics between the Ottoman Empire’s ethnic groups can provide insights for contemporary knowledge production for Armenia\, Greece\, Cyprus\, Iraq\, Israel\, Jordan\, Lebanon\, Palestine\, Syria\, Turkey and the United States. The papers selected for the symposium will be featured in a commemorative tome. Researchers are kindly asked to submit their 250-word abstract by January 31\, 2022. \nTo submit an abstract\, please click here.

SUMMARY:[American Research Institute in Turkey] “An Attempted Pogrom in the Early Twentieth-Century Ottoman Society: Let Adapazarı not be Adana!” by Dr. Ümit Kurt
DESCRIPTION:A compelling incident occurred in the district of Adapazarı on February 25\, 1911. Three Armenian and two Greek local men were caught while having sexual intercourse with a Muslim prostitute in an Armenian bathhouse and then were brought in. Thereupon\, Sırrı Bey\, the district governor of Adapazarı (appointed on April 29\, 1910)\, gave a political character to this incident—in light of the the Adana Massacre of 1909—in order to have them be imprisoned\, put on trial before the judge and be condemned. Through this particular event\, Dr. Kurt tries to explain why intercommunal killings happen in some situations\, but not in others. He argues that with careful microhistorical research it is possible to reveal certain local factors that lead to restraint. He also shows likelihood of idea of Ottoman unity (İttihad-ı Anasır) between Ottoman Muslim and non-Muslim peoples in a borderland region to the Balkans as well as exploring political space for negotiations among local actors. Through microhistory and sociolegal analysis\, he employs this specific adultery event to understand state-society relations within the late Ottoman context. \nTo attend this event\, please use this Zoom registration link. \nFor more information\, please visit the event page. \nEvent contact information: aritevents@gmail.com

SUMMARY:[Levantine Heritage Foundation] Changing by the Needs: The Story of the Hungarian Society in Constantinople – Gabor Fodor
DESCRIPTION:After the failure of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848‒1849 against the Habsburg Monarchy\, thousands of soldiers found asylum in the Ottoman Empire. Even though most of them left the empire within a year\, hundreds preferred to stay\, live\, and work in a society about which they knew virtually nothing. The importance of the Hungarian refugee colony was not limited to active military service in the Ottoman Army\, but a few of them succeeded in building up their civil careers as entrepreneur\, shop owner\, or translator. This was the period when the Hungarian Society in Constantinople was established with the aim of aiding the refugees by preserving the revolution. \nFor more information on this event\, please view the event page. \nTo attend this event\, please use this registration link. \nEvent contact information: contact@levantineheritage.com

SUMMARY:[American Research Institute in Turkey] “Modernity’s Other: Nostalgia for Village Life in Turkey” by Nathan Young
DESCRIPTION:Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Izmir and Ankara\, Modernity’s Other: Nostalgia for Village Life in Turkey\, demonstrates how sentiments for small-scale\, rural lifeways continue to shape Turkish identity and national formation. Applying current ideas from nostalgia theory\, Nathan Young analyzes the significance of rural nostalgia from the nation’s founding to its present\, where it manifests in advertising\, media entertainment\, and politics. Young contends that the durability of rural nostalgia illustrates and interprets the connection many Turks maintain with their agrarian hometowns despite the rapid influx to urban spaces. Additionally\, he claims that such nostalgias reveal essentialized notions of Turkish identity\, frameworks of moral-social expectations\, and definitions of an idyllic “good life.” Funded by a Fulbright-Hays DDRA and additional grants\, ethnographic fieldwork included over hundred\, twenty semi-situated interviews at a variety of location in the vicinities of Izmir and Ankara (2018—2019). \nFor more information on this event\, please view the event page. \nTo register for this event\, please use this Zoom registration link. \nEvent contact information: aritevents@gmail.com

SUMMARY:[Levantine Heritage Foundation] Levantine-Polish Contacts in Late Ottoman Istanbul – Paulina Dominik
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the nineteenth century the Ottoman Empire was one of the chief destinations for the Polish political émigrés who following the final partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1795 fled to Istanbul in the hope of securing Ottoman support in their efforts to regain national independence. For four decades between the 1840s and the 1870s\, the Ottoman capital became a key centre of their activities against Tsarist Russia. The\nPolish presence in the Ottoman Empire\, however\, was not limited to activities aimed at the restoration of an independent Poland. Rather\, Polish émigrés were also involved in various enterprises connected to the nineteenth reforms of the Ottoman state and chief political figures of the Tanzimat Era welcomed their services. \nFor more information on this event\, please view the event page. \nTo attend this event\, please use this registration link. \nEvent contact information: contact@levantineheritage.com

SUMMARY:[American Research Institute in Turkey] ‘Rethinking Economic Sources of Hamidian Legitimacy’ by Naz Yücel
DESCRIPTION:This talk revisits the reign of one of the most contested historical figures in Ottoman history\, Sultan Abdülhamid II (r. 1876-1909). It questions the financial underpinnings of the Hamidian regime that enabled its sustenance for over three decades by focusing on the Sultan’s Privy Purse.
