DESCRIPTION:Throughout the nineteenth century the Ottoman Empire was one of the chief destinations for the Polish political émigrés who following the final partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1795 fled to Istanbul in the hope of securing Ottoman support in their efforts to regain national independence. For four decades between the 1840s and the 1870s\, the Ottoman capital became a key centre of their activities against Tsarist Russia. The\nPolish presence in the Ottoman Empire\, however\, was not limited to activities aimed at the restoration of an independent Poland. It will be an exploration of the many kinds of connections between the Greek War of Independence itself and developments and actors to the East and West. The Greek Kingdom that was established out of the War of Independence was a new state-formation\, and one that blended aspects of old and new regimes of the moment. DESCRIPTION:Book presentation by Hilal Alkan (Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient)\, Ayşe Dayı (Orca Dreams: Platform for Mindful Living)\, Sezin Topçu (French National Research Center)\, Betül Yarar (Universität Bremen) and Esra Sarıoğlu (Max Planck Institute for Human Development). \nIn Turkey\, during the last decade\, women’s central role in reproductive and domestic work has been reactionarily reaffirmed by the policies of the Justice and Development Party. Many such shifts in family policies and regulations about reproductive rights have created intense debate in the public sphere and women developed various responses to them. Taking Turkey as the case study\, this book examines the various ways neoliberal modes of governing women’s bodies interact with conservative and authoritarian measures. It\, therefore\, presents analytical tools applicable under rising authoritarianisms and conservatisms worldwide. \nThe book centers on reproduction\, maternity and sexuality as three main areas of governmental interventions into the female body. Topics for discussion include: the expansion of IVF and egg markets\, the privatization of gynaecological and obstetrical care\, differential treatment of poor and ethnic minority women’s fertility/sexuality\, pious women’s juggling of reproductive freedoms and religious premises\, and women’s multiple responses to the shifts in policy and discourse. \nThe book was published by Bloomsbury in 2021. \nThis event will be held in a hybrid format. DESCRIPTION:Turkish Literature in Translation Reading Group: The Mosquito Bite Author by Barış Bıçakçı\nwith translator Dr. Matthew Chovanec\nThursday September 30\, 2021 • via Zoom\n3:00 PM – 4:30 PM\n \nRegister to attend this event here. \nThe Turkish Literature in Translation Reading Group aims to gather those who are interested in Turkish literature at UT together. It meets each month throughout the semester and the discussions are held in English. This semester\, due to COVID-19 circumstances\, all of our discussions will be held virtually\, through Zoom. The meetings are open to the entire UT community\, as well as interested individuals outside UT. For your questions\, please contact İpek Sahinler at ipeksahinler@utexas.edu \nThe Mosquito Bite Author follows in the great tradition of the “Turkish Oblomov” by focusing on someone who initially seems to be an undeserving protagonist—much like the titular character in Ivan Goncharov’s work. Borrowing from the narcissistic\, petty-bourgeois male novels before it\, it relishes in the mundane and the self-absorbed. Cemil stares wistfully at jars of jam\, yells at soccer matches\, and mopes around the apartment until his wife Nazlı gets home. He has written a manuscript\, yes\, but as we wait along with him to hear back from the publisher\, we aren’t sure whether or not it will end up justifying the attention we’ve given him. If it’s a work of genius\, then all of Cemil’s aphorisms and insights will prove to have been profound and poetic. If it is rejected\, then we will have spent 150 pages following another one of those failed writer characters we so often get from authors who “don’t have the emotional depth needed to write normal characters\,” as Cemil himself notes. \nMatthew Chovanec is a writer and teacher specializing in the literature\, digital culture\, and ecology of the Middle East. His work has appeared in numerous online publications and peer-reviewed publications\, and he currently has two published book translations.
