DESCRIPTION:Book presentation by Hilal Alkan (Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient)\, Ayşe Dayı (Orca Dreams: Platform for Mindful Living)\, Sezin Topçu (French National Research Center)\, Betül Yarar (Universität Bremen) and Esra Sarıoğlu (Max Planck Institute for Human Development). \nIn Turkey\, during the last decade\, women’s central role in reproductive and domestic work has been reactionarily reaffirmed by the policies of the Justice and Development Party. Many such shifts in family policies and regulations about reproductive rights have created intense debate in the public sphere and women developed various responses to them. Taking Turkey as the case study\, this book examines the various ways neoliberal modes of governing women’s bodies interact with conservative and authoritarian measures. It\, therefore\, presents analytical tools applicable under rising authoritarianisms and conservatisms worldwide. \nThe book centers on reproduction\, maternity and sexuality as three main areas of governmental interventions into the female body. Topics for discussion include: the expansion of IVF and egg markets\, the privatization of gynaecological and obstetrical care\, differential treatment of poor and ethnic minority women’s fertility/sexuality\, pious women’s juggling of reproductive freedoms and religious premises\, and women’s multiple responses to the shifts in policy and discourse. \nThe book was published by Bloomsbury in 2021. \nThis event will be held in a hybrid format. For your questions\, please contact İpek Sahinler at ipeksahinler@utexas.edu \nThe Mosquito Bite Author follows in the great tradition of the “Turkish Oblomov” by focusing on someone who initially seems to be an undeserving protagonist—much like the titular character in Ivan Goncharov’s work. Borrowing from the narcissistic\, petty-bourgeois male novels before it\, it relishes in the mundane and the self-absorbed. Cemil stares wistfully at jars of jam\, yells at soccer matches\, and mopes around the apartment until his wife Nazlı gets home. He has written a manuscript\, yes\, but as we wait along with him to hear back from the publisher\, we aren’t sure whether or not it will end up justifying the attention we’ve given him. If it’s a work of genius\, then all of Cemil’s aphorisms and insights will prove to have been profound and poetic. If it is rejected\, then we will have spent 150 pages following another one of those failed writer characters we so often get from authors who “don’t have the emotional depth needed to write normal characters\,” as Cemil himself notes. \nMatthew Chovanec is a writer and teacher specializing in the literature\, digital culture\, and ecology of the Middle East. His work has appeared in numerous online publications and peer-reviewed publications\, and he currently has two published book translations. DESCRIPTION:Ottoman Palestine and its legacy have been a common reference point in the Israeli / Palestinian conflict. Both sides have referred to specific historical events and details from the Ottoman era to justify their claims to authority\, property\, and land. What is the importance of knowing the Ottoman past for understanding today? How has Ottoman history informed both the Palestinian and Israeli actors’ rhetorics? This roundtable is bringing scholars from different intellectual backgrounds to discuss these questions and beyond. Dr. Louis Fishman is the author of Jews and Palestinians in the Late Ottoman Era\, 1908-1914 (Edinburgh UP\, 2020); Dr. Michelle Campos is the author of Ottoman Brothers: Muslims\, Christians\, and Jews in Early-Twentieth Century Palestine (Stanford UP\, 2010); Dr. Issam Nassar is the author of several books including Storyteller of Jerusalem: The Life and Times of Wasif Jawhariyyeh\, 1904-1948 (Olive Brach P\, 2013); Dr. Abigail Jacobson is the author of From Empire to Empire: Jerusalem Between Ottoman and British Rule (Syracuse UP\, 2011); and Jehad Abusalim is completing his Ph.D. on the Palestinian and Arab perceptions of the Zionist project and the Jewish question before 1948. \nTo attend this event\, please use this registration link.

SUMMARY:[New York University’s Ottoman and Turkish Studies Initiative] Lecture with Elizabeth Frierson: “Great Lakes\, Mighty Seas\, and Uncharted Waters:  Ottoman Studies\, its Past\, Present\, and Future”
DESCRIPTION:Studies of the Ottoman Empire\, a series of overlapping international enterprises\, have mapped new understandings of human behavior onto intentionally forgotten and remembered landscapes since the opening of the Prime Ministry Archives in Turkey. This year’s sessions of the Mid-Atlantic Ottoman Studies Workshop have showcased many new modes of analysis\, and this talk will attempt to synthesize some of those findings. This synthesis will be a launching point for considering how digitization and changing political situations\, and now a pandemic\, have been driving new approaches in fields known from the beginning for their innovation and adaptability. As well\, scholars’\, archivists’\, and librarians’ increasing vulnerability and isolation during times of assault on academic freedom at many points of its construction are spurring changes. At the same time\, COVID-19’s forcing us to expand webinars and online conferences for the last year has had a democratizing effect in terms of access to works in progress. Following this question\, Dr. Gülay Türkmen will present her new book “Under the Banner of Islam: Turks\, Kurds\, and the Limits of Religious Unity” where she explores how religious\, ethnic\, and national identities converge in ethnic conflicts between co-religionists in Turkey. DESCRIPTION:This panel will explore a diverse set of studies around the notions of migration\, state-making\, and borders in the late 19th and early 20th centuries of the Ottoman Empire. Zeynep Devrim Gürsel traces the use of photographs at the border during Ottoman Armenian emigration to the United States in order to examine how photography and statecraft intersect in the making and unmaking of citizens; Chris Gratien explores the category of “Ottoman American” to refer to Ottoman immigrants to the United States in order to analyze how/if this notion was socially\, culturally\, and politically meaningful in the Ottoman diaspora; and David Gutman discusses how the conjuring of the “Armenian migrant” as a security threat in the Ottoman state discourse relates to strategies of border security and surveillance. Our commentator\, Robert Zens\, will draw on each of these presentations to speak about some of the relevant themes around Ottoman migration that emerge throughout these presentations.
