SUMMARY:[Ottoman and Turkish Studies Initiative at NYU] Ottoman Palestine: Why Does it Matter?
DESCRIPTION:Ottoman Palestine and its legacy have been a common reference point in the Israeli / Palestinian conflict. Both sides have referred to specific historical events and details from the Ottoman era to justify their claims to authority\, property\, and land. What is the importance of knowing the Ottoman past for understanding today? How has Ottoman history informed both the Palestinian and Israeli actors’ rhetorics? This roundtable is bringing scholars from different intellectual backgrounds to discuss these questions and beyond. Dr. Louis Fishman is the author of Jews and Palestinians in the Late Ottoman Era\, 1908-1914 (Edinburgh UP\, 2020); Dr. Michelle Campos is the author of Ottoman Brothers: Muslims\, Christians\, and Jews in Early-Twentieth Century Palestine (Stanford UP\, 2010); Dr. Issam Nassar is the author of several books including Storyteller of Jerusalem: The Life and Times of Wasif Jawhariyyeh\, 1904-1948 (Olive Brach P\, 2013); Dr. Abigail Jacobson is the author of From Empire to Empire: Jerusalem Between Ottoman and British Rule (Syracuse UP\, 2011); and Jehad Abusalim is completing his Ph.D. on the Palestinian and Arab perceptions of the Zionist project and the Jewish question before 1948. \nTo attend this event\, please use this registration link.

SUMMARY:[New York University’s Ottoman and Turkish Studies Initiative] Lecture with Elizabeth Frierson: “Great Lakes\, Mighty Seas\, and Uncharted Waters: Ottoman Studies\, its Past\, Present\, and Future”
DESCRIPTION:Studies of the Ottoman Empire\, a series of overlapping international enterprises\, have mapped new understandings of human behavior onto intentionally forgotten and remembered landscapes since the opening of the Prime Ministry Archives in Turkey. This year’s sessions of the Mid-Atlantic Ottoman Studies Workshop have showcased many new modes of analysis\, and this talk will attempt to synthesize some of those findings. This synthesis will be a launching point for considering how digitization and changing political situations\, and now a pandemic\, have been driving new approaches in fields known from the beginning for their innovation and adaptability. As well\, scholars’\, archivists’\, and librarians’ increasing vulnerability and isolation during times of assault on academic freedom at many points of its construction are spurring changes. At the same time\, COVID-19’s forcing us to expand webinars and online conferences for the last year has had a democratizing effect in terms of access to works in progress. How can we form a new sort of akhi discourse adapted to conditions of research and exchange of findings in the 21st century? \nTo attend this event\, please use this Zoom registration link. \nContact information: abb12@nyu.edu

The book tells a specific story of religion\, ethnicity\, and nationalism in Turkey’s Kurdish conflict\, but it also tracks a broader narrative of how ethnic and religious identities are negotiated when resolving conflict. \nDr. Gülay Türkmen is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Graz’s Center for Southeast European Studies and a visiting researcher at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity. \nTime/Date: Thursday\, 10 June 2021\, at 18:00-19:30 (CET). \nFor more information\, please go to the event page. \nTo attend the event\, please use this Zoom link. \n

SUMMARY:[New York University’s Ottoman and Turkish Studies Initiative] Panel: Ottoman Migration\, Immigration\, and the “New World”
DESCRIPTION:This panel will explore a diverse set of studies around the notions of migration\, state-making\, and borders in the late 19th and early 20th centuries of the Ottoman Empire. Zeynep Devrim Gürsel traces the use of photographs at the border during Ottoman Armenian emigration to the United States in order to examine how photography and statecraft intersect in the making and unmaking of citizens; Chris Gratien explores the category of “Ottoman American” to refer to Ottoman immigrants to the United States in order to analyze how/if this notion was socially\, culturally\, and politically meaningful in the Ottoman diaspora; and David Gutman discusses how the conjuring of the “Armenian migrant” as a security threat in the Ottoman state discourse relates to strategies of border security and surveillance. Our commentator\, Robert Zens\, will draw on each of these presentations to speak about some of the relevant themes around Ottoman migration that emerge throughout these presentations. The panel will be followed by a 30-minute Q&A session. \nTo attend this event\, please use this Zoom registration link. \nContact information: abb12@nyu.edu

SUMMARY:[New York University’s Ottoman and Turkish Studies Initiative] Panel: Women\, Agency and Patronage in the Ottoman Empire
DESCRIPTION:This panel will present a diverse and nuanced set of studies that seek to expand\, question\, and resituate our understandings of gender and women’s agency in the Ottoman Empire. \nGamze Yavuzer examines 17th-century legal cases of Muslim and non-Muslim Ottoman women abandoned by their husbands to question the notion of the advantageousness of the Sharia courts vis-à-vis the non-Muslim community courts for women; Betül Başaran explores the practice of marriages between Ottoman women and foreigners (kebin) to introduce new ways of conceptualizing women’s agency in the empire; Susanna Ferguson investigates gender segregation in schooling and the gendered practice of moral cultivation and proper raising of children (tarbiya) as a way to understand how civilizational labor offered women new opportunities to claim authority in the late Ottoman Arab East; and Müge Özbek analyzes post-Ottoman memoirs and travelogues of women accompanying their male relatives throughout the Arab provinces to examine how female mobility impacted the workings of the Empire and its colonial projects. Our commentator\, Michael Ferguson\, will draw on each of these presentations to speak about some of the relevant themes around gender\, agency\, and patronage. SUMMARY:[University of Graz\, Centre for Southeast European Studies] Online Book Launch: “The National Frame: Art and State Violence in Turkey and Germany” by Dr. Banu Karaca
DESCRIPTION:In “The National Frame: Art and State Violence in Turkey and Germany” Dr. Banu Karaca explores the art settings and actors of two cities: Istanbul and Berlin. The book is an ethnographic investigation of how artists navigate the art world\, the dependencies and power differentials it creates and reproduces\, their relationship to cultural policies\, and how arts patrons and sponsors see their role in society. It tells the often-unsettling stories of the monies that sustain the art world: More often than not\, art capital is rooted in histories of state violence and dispossession. \nDate/Time: Thursday\, 20 May 2021\, at 18:00-19:30 (CET). \nTo attend this event\, please use this Zoom link. \nFor more information on the event\, please go to the event page. \nContact information: derya.oezkay@uni-graz.at \n \nPoster PDF \n  \n

SUMMARY:[Stanford Program on Turkey and OTSA] Reckoning the Cold War's Legacy in Turkey
DESCRIPTION:This conversation with Behlül Özkan (Marmara University) and Mehmet Ali Tuğtan (Bilgi University) will examine the adverse and long-lasting impact of the US-led anti-communism on Turkish democracy. We will trace the roots of current authoritarianism in the top-down Islamization of society and institutions since the 1950s\, paying special attention to the role of the military — an institution often regarded as the protector of secularism.\n\n\n\n\nBehlül Özkan received his PhD from Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy\, Tufts University in 2009. He is currently Associate Professor in the Department of International Relations at Marmara University\, Istanbul. Özkan is the author of From the Abode of Islam to the Turkish Vatan: Making of a National Homeland in Turkey (Yale University Press\, 2012). He also contributed op-eds to New York Times\, Huffington Post\, Open Democracy. Özkan is also a board member of European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR). In recent years his academic studies has been focused on Political Islam in Turkey and Europe. \n\n\n\n\n\nMehmet Ali Tuğtan majored in international relations and political science at Marmara University; he has completed his MA in 2000 with the dissertation titled Emergence of A Post Cold War European Security Architecture and his PhD in 2007 with the dissertation titled Turkish-US Security Relations 1945-2003: A Game-Theoretical Analysis of the Institutional Effect in Boğaziçi University Political Science program. He has been a member of İstanbul Bilgi University Department of International Relations since 2008. Mehmet Ali Tuğtan has been the Chair of Bilgi Distance Education Center (UZEM) since August 2017. Dr. Tugtan’s areas of study include Turkish-American Relations\, Contemporary World Politics and Security Studies. In addition to several book chapters and articles on these subjects\, Dr. Tugtan has edited a book on the Turkish involvement in the Korean War (Kore Savaşı: Uzak Savaşın Askerleri) published in 2013.
