DESCRIPTION:This panel will explore a diverse set of studies around the notions of migration\, state-making\, and borders in the late 19th and early 20th centuries of the Ottoman Empire. Zeynep Devrim Gürsel traces the use of photographs at the border during Ottoman Armenian emigration to the United States in order to examine how photography and statecraft intersect in the making and unmaking of citizens; Chris Gratien explores the category of “Ottoman American” to refer to Ottoman immigrants to the United States in order to analyze how/if this notion was socially\, culturally\, and politically meaningful in the Ottoman diaspora; and David Gutman discusses how the conjuring of the “Armenian migrant” as a security threat in the Ottoman state discourse relates to strategies of border security and surveillance. Our commentator\, Robert Zens\, will draw on each of these presentations to speak about some of the relevant themes around Ottoman migration that emerge throughout these presentations. DESCRIPTION:This panel will present a diverse and nuanced set of studies that seek to expand\, question\, and resituate our understandings of gender and women’s agency in the Ottoman Empire. \nGamze Yavuzer examines 17th-century legal cases of Muslim and non-Muslim Ottoman women abandoned by their husbands to question the notion of the advantageousness of the Sharia courts vis-à-vis the non-Muslim community courts for women; Betül Başaran explores the practice of marriages between Ottoman women and foreigners (kebin) to introduce new ways of conceptualizing women’s agency in the empire; Susanna Ferguson investigates gender segregation in schooling and the gendered practice of moral cultivation and proper raising of children (tarbiya) as a way to understand how civilizational labor offered women new opportunities to claim authority in the late Ottoman Arab East; and Müge Özbek analyzes post-Ottoman memoirs and travelogues of women accompanying their male relatives throughout the Arab provinces to examine how female mobility impacted the workings of the Empire and its colonial projects. SUMMARY:[Stanford Program on Turkey and OTSA] Reckoning the Cold War's Legacy in Turkey
DESCRIPTION:This conversation with Behlül Özkan (Marmara University) and Mehmet Ali Tuğtan (Bilgi University) will examine the adverse and long-lasting impact of the US-led anti-communism on Turkish democracy. We will trace the roots of current authoritarianism in the top-down Islamization of society and institutions since the 1950s\, paying special attention to the role of the military — an institution often regarded as the protector of secularism.\n\n\n\n\nBehlül Özkan received his PhD from Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy\, Tufts University in 2009. He is currently Associate Professor in the Department of International Relations at Marmara University\, Istanbul. Özkan is the author of From the Abode of Islam to the Turkish Vatan: Making of a National Homeland in Turkey (Yale University Press\, 2012). He also contributed op-eds to New York Times\, Huffington Post\, Open Democracy. Özkan is also a board member of European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR). In recent years his academic studies has been focused on Political Islam in Turkey and Europe. \n\n\n\n\n\nMehmet Ali Tuğtan majored in international relations and political science at Marmara University; he has completed his MA in 2000 with the dissertation titled Emergence of A Post Cold War European Security Architecture and his PhD in 2007 with the dissertation titled Turkish-US Security Relations 1945-2003: A Game-Theoretical Analysis of the Institutional Effect in Boğaziçi University Political Science program. He has been a member of İstanbul Bilgi University Department of International Relations since 2008. Mehmet Ali Tuğtan has been the Chair of Bilgi Distance Education Center (UZEM) since August 2017. Dr. Tugtan’s areas of study include Turkish-American Relations\, Contemporary World Politics and Security Studies. DESCRIPTION:As part of our online lecture series “Intersectional Perspectives on Turkey\,” we will be hosting the historian Dr. Khatchig Mouradian (Columbia University) in our upcoming event which will be introduced by Dr. Seyhan Bayraktar (Zurich University of Applied Sciences\, ZHAW\, SFST). \nMouradian will present his new book The Resistance Network: The Armenian Genocide and Humanitarianism in Ottoman Syria\, 1915–1918 where he provides a social history of the Armenian Genocide in wartime Aleppo under the Ottoman Empire. Mouradian explores an underground network of humanitarianism and unarmed resistance that saved countless lives despite the violent and systematic destruction in the cities\, concentration camps\, and massacre sites in the region. \nZoom Registration.

DESCRIPTION:The Promise Institute for Human Rights and The Promise Armenian Institute at UCLA\, in partnership with the UCLA Armenian Music Program under the direction of Movses Pogossian\, present “Paging through Photos and Songs: Hayganush Mark and Koharig Ghazarosian’s Friendship in Post-Genocide Istanbul” by Dr. Melissa Bilal and Dr. Lerna Ekmekcioglu. This lecture is co-sponsored by the UCLA Center for Near Eastern Studies\, UCLA Armenian Law Students’ Association\, Armenian Museum of America\, Society for Armenian Studies\, and the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research. \nIn this event\, Dr. Lerna Ekmekcioglu (MIT) and Dr. Melissa Bilal (UCLA) will follow the story of a friendship between two Armenian women in Istanbul that endured the hardships of WWI\, the Armenian Genocide\, and early republican Turkey’s repressive minority politics. Hayganush Mark was the leading Armenian feminist writer of her time and Koharig Ghazarosian was a prominent composer\, concert pianist\, and piano teacher active in Paris and Istanbul. Their intertwined lives can be traced in photographs\, letters\, and pages of sheet music. Internationally acclaimed actress\, filmmaker\, and writer Nora Armani\, mezzo-soprano Danielle Segen of the Vem Ensemble\, and internationally renowned pianist Steven Vanhauwaert performed and recorded Ghazarosian’s song settings of Mark’s poetry to be premiered at this event. Through this repertoire which was brought back to life as a part of their ongoing project Feminism in Armenian: An Interpretive Anthology and Digital Archive\, Bilal and Ekmekcioglu will discuss the ruptures and continuities in Armenian community life in Turkey.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Hüseyin Yılmaz\, George Mason University\nAbstract: This talk will explore the impact of translation on Ottoman language\, culture\, and politics. Most texts written in the first two centuries of Ottoman state formation in western Anatolia were works translated from either Arabic or Persian. This translation movement was the principal venue by which the Ottomans engaged with the broader world\, were exposed diverse traditions of learning\, and transmitted knowledge. Above all\, the Turkish language\, which gradually rose to become one of the principal literary mediums of the early modern world\, was a direct product of this translation activity. Translation and transmission of knowledge have a profound impact on the Ottoman view of the world and self-perception\, especially those works that became popular performative reads among broader public.\nZoom Registration here.
